There’s a lot going on this week, just not in the music world (other than festivals and summer tours), so we’re going to go straight to the live music picks for the week.
Wednesday, June 12 – RAVI COLTRANE, the talented son of jazz immortal, John Coltrane, has recently released “Spirit Fiction”, an album that takes his already excellent playing to a new level! Tonight, or actually yesterday, he started a 5 day run at Birdland, which concludes this Saturday, June 15. DELBERT MCCLINTON brings his masterful stage presence to BB King’s, and ZAKK WYLDE concludes a 3 day engagement at The Iridium.
Thursday, June 13 – A TASTE OF COUNTRY music festival kicks off tonight at Hunter Mountain, and runs through Saturday night. Headlined by WILLIE NELSON, the rest of the line up is mostly modern Country hat bands, with one exception. BLACKBERRY SMOKE, who regular readers of this column will remember were one of my favorite discoveries of 2012, are also on the bill, and The Smoke and Willie will be worth the price of admission alone. Hopefully, they’re playing on the same day. More info at tasteofcountryfestival.com.
Friday, June 14 – There once was a band called Uncle Tupulo. When they broke up, the two head honchos formed two bands, Wilco, who’ve gone on to fame and fortune, and SON VOLT, who haven’t. In what passes for the music business today, this makes perfect sense, because I’ve never heard anything by Wilco that moved me, but Son Volt have what it takes, and they’re playing at The Bowery Ballroom tonight, and The Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow. If you like Americana, this will be a great show. JIMMY VIVINO, man of many fingers in many pies, will be playing with THE BARNBURNERS at Iridium tonight. Could this be the same Barnburners that Levon used to play with, just before his late career revival? I’m guessing, yes.
It’s easy to forget that BLACK FLAG existed before and after Henry Rollins, but founder/guitarist, Greg Ginn, has reformed the group around vocalist Ron Reyes, who has been with Black Flag since the late 1970’s, and a new album and tour are in the works. Tonight and tomorrow at Warsaw in Brooklyn.
Saturday, June 15 – If it’s mid-June, it’s THE CLEARWATER FESTIVAL, a weekend fun fest that features many great bands, craftspeople, and vendors. This year the schedule is better than ever, with more emphasis on the music. Full line up and more info at clearwaterfestival.org.
Monday, June 17 – The fabulous DUKE MCVINNIE BAND continues their Monday night residency at The Bearsville Theater. Last week, the place was empty, which is a disgrace for a band this talented. SUPPORT LOCAL MUSICIANS! Especially when they’re awesome! In the city, JIMMY VIVINO with THE LES PAUL TRIO at Iridium.
Tuesday, June 18 – The always amazing guitarist, JOHN MCLAUGHLIN starts a 3 night run at The Blue Note with his band, 4th DIMENSION tonight.
Wednesday, June 19 – Busy night tonight. BILL PAYNE, from Little Feat, is at Highline Ballroom. IAN MCLAGEN, from Faces and Small Faces, is at Iridium (next week at Bearsville Theater. Don’t miss!). THE ROOTS and My Morning Jacket frontman, JIM JAMES, are at the Prospect Park Bandshell. LEO KOTTKE, the best living trance-raga guitar player, is at Club Helsinki in Hudson, and FLEETWOOD MAC is at The Times Union center in Albany.
Thursday, June 20 – The week concludes with HOT TUNA at Bethel Woods.
Have a great one!
